As part of a bridal party the best man and groomsmen are attendants or helpers to the groom assisting him prior to and during the wedding celebration. Usually the groom selects his closest friends and or relatives to act as a groomsman and it is considered an honour to be chosen. One of the groomsmen is chosen by the groom to serve as the best man. The best man has a number of important duties to carry out both leading up to and on your wedding day.
* His first and most obvious duty is to organise the bucks night or stag night.
* Assist the groom with his responsibilities, sourcing the transport, photographer etc.
* Accompany the groom and ushers to hire or buy their outfits and that everyone is organised for the wedding day. He will call to double check that the suits delivery is on schedule.
* Make sure the orders for the flowers for the bride and bridesmaids, buttonholes for the groom, best man and ushers, corsages for the mothers of the bride and groom are in hand and will be delivered on time and to the appropriate places.
* Organise accommodation for himself and the groom for the night before the special day.
* Responsible for the paying the church fees before the service on behalf of the groom.
* Responsible for getting the groom to the church on time.
* Look after the wedding rings and hand them to the groom at the right time during the wedding ceremony.
* He may be asked to be one of the witnesses for the signing of the marriage certificate.
* He will escort the chief bridesmaid from the church or venue and will ensure that everyone has transport to wedding reception.
* His biggest responsibilty comes at the wedding reception where it is traditional for the best man to initiate the toasts to the bride and groom, to make the third speech (following the groom) and read out any emails or messages.
* He will be responsible to take care of the honeymoon travel documents and passports.
Your best man will be a key player on your wedding day. Make sure he fully understands his responsibilities and delegate those duties to him from the beginning.
The groom may also designate other friends or relatives
to act as ushers whose main task is to usher guests to their seats before the wedding ceremony.
The groom will traditionally purchase thank you gifts to show appreciation and gratitude for the help of his best man and groomsmen.
An appropriate groomsman gift will also be a memento of the wedding day for many years to come. Traditionally, the groom will give a gift to his father and father of the bride. Ideal gifts include wedding cuff links, stubby holders, pewter mugs, wedding socks and bar sets.
